Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly linkup of book bloggers hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl! This week, we’re talking about the oldest books on our TBR lists…not the ones that have been there the longest, but the ones that were published the earliest! I’m going to cheat a tiny bit and not do ONLY the ten oldest because that feels boring to me. Instead I’m going to do ten books over 100 years old, which feels plenty old to me!
The Tale of Genji (published 11th century): One of the first novels ever published, like…ever.
Indiana (published 1832): One of the many, many novels written by a man that turned out to be actually written by a lady!
Dead Souls (published 1842): I do love Russian lit and so I am embarrassed that I have never read Gogol!
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (published 1848): Enough people have told me that this is actually the best of the novels by the Bronte sisters that I have no choice but to read it.
North and South (published 1855): I’ve heard this is a dishy classic and has some themes in common with one of favorite classics, Tess of the d’Urbervilles.
The Woman in White (published 1859): I really loved The Moonstone and want to read more of Collins’s work!
The Return of the Native (published 1878): I’ve read two of Hardy’s books and really liked them so time to try a third.
Noli Mi Tangere (published 1887): This one is a classic of Filipino literature and I actually don’t know that I’ve read much (if any) by Filipino authors!
I Await the Devil’s Coming (published 1902): This memoir was considered very scandalous indeed in its time so I want to see what all the fuss is about.
Death in Venice (published 1911): I’ve never read Thomas Mann!
